If your loved one is gone and survival is all that matters, might as well take the throne of your region so at least you can bolster your security protocols in an attempt to survive long enough to eventually see her again perhaps. Sookie is presumed dead or gone forever he presence cannot be felt. He must remove his current queen and ascend beyond his current sheriff to survive. He can’t go against the authority who have been secretly driving him for 3 decades. Even when he takes his kingship that’s pure survival. Very few of his actions are self-motivated actually. He risked his life many times for her walking into daylight almost certain death in that case as well as his freedom and other major risks inside season 3 for example when the king of Mississippi takes both of them prisoner. Difficult to defy such entities but where there was wiggle room he took it. Further there is Bill’s secret agenda being driven by the most powerful people in the world as we learned in his flashbacks to his first encounter with Nan Flanagan. Eric ranked above him and both had knowledge of sookie coupled with a desire to feed on her or worse. Murdering Eric and Pam was part of those politics. Complicated vampire politics were a major hinderance in his courtship but ultimately he did love her and want to do right by her. By the end of season 2 he was asking her hand in marriage. As soon as Bill got to know Sookie he did fall in love with her. She wanted to do the right thing and protect this vampire. He had lived as an outsider from society for well well over 100 years. He wanted a chance to get back in his old family house and maybe just maybe get a taste of his humanity back deep down. What could either party have done differently? Bill had to display loyalty to his queen or face severe punishment. There are no real rules or plans in the playbook that one can follow as a guide when supernatural occurrences unfold in a fantasy story. A lot of people in my opinion, project real world issues and personal issues in some cases onto Bill. Bill does go on to murder both them in vengeance as well.

She makes a comment about having to “bury her clothes” due to her new friendship with a dangerous man and seems more upset that she would worry her grandmother than about what actually happened to her. Not that I’m attempting to justify his flaws I’m just pointing out an alternate way of viewing it. Knowing he had that ability lessens the severity to some degree. While it was painful and traumatic, he knew she could not die and that her pain would be gone in a few minutes like a bad dream. Disobeying a command from the top like that would be a crime worthy of death or serious serious punishment.

Bill was on assignment for the queen of his territory. It would be very indelicate for a man from his time period to say “hey don’t be surprised if you have some hardcore sex dreams about me it’s just a side effect of going all pagan and drinking my blood like a good little whore”. Even at that point in time S1 E1 where his humanity is somewhat “lost”, he is still very chivalrous and old mannered. Purposely vague isn’t necessarily accurate.
